This course covers the generation, storage, and transport of thermal energy in solid materials. The course starts with the fundamental theory of thermal properties, such as heat capacity and thermal conductivity, based on the quantum properties of phonons and electrons, as well as the thermal radiation properties due to the quantum properties of photons. By using the fundamental theory, students will understand the thermal transport properties of metallic, inorganic, organic, and recently emerging materials, and how to design materials for thermal management of electronic and energy devices.
